Key Areas of Focus Across Grades 3-8

Reading:  Students are expected to read and comprehend literary and informational texts at their grade level with accuracy and fluency, using context to self-correct, and understanding text features and organization.

 

Writing:  The writing process is emphasized, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing in various genres, with a focus on developing coherent writing and using precise language and transitions.

 

Speaking and Listening:  Active listening skills are crucial for participation in discussions and conversations in various settings, and students are expected to speak clearly and expressively.

 

Language:  This includes a focus on vocabulary development, word analysis skills, and the correct use of grammar and sentence structure. Literacy

Foundations:  Explicit instruction in phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension is a cornerstone of the standards, particularly for younger grades.
